Collagen deposition in bronchial hyperresponsiveness

l

Prejunctional and postjunctional factors in bronchial responsivenessIn asthmatics, chronic inflammation is associated with increased deposition of collagen in the subepithelial reticular layer. This increase in airway wall thickness may enhance the effect of smooth muscle contraction on the increase in airways resistance. Conversely, the collagen may contribute to stiffening of the airway wall and decrease the degree of narrowing with smooth muscle contraction.
