Inflammatory cells and mediators in bronchial hyperresponsiveness

Prejunctional and postjunctional factors in bronchial responsiveness

The airway wall of an asthmatic subject contains increased numbers of inflammatory cells (macrophages, mast cells, eosinophils, lymphocytes, neutrophils). The cells release mediators and cytokines, such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, adenosine-mono-phosphate, platelet activating factor, and many interleukines which enhance bronchial responsiveness.
