Spirometry after bronchodilatation

Flow-volume curve prior to and after bronchodilator drug

There is some improvement after administration of a bronchodilator drug to this patient. Endexpiratory volume (the FRC) after a normal breath is lower. The FVC has increased. The improvement in expiratory flow is small, but at the same absolute lung volume flow during normal tidal breathing is consistently higher than before bronchodilatation. Inspiratory flow has increased perceptibly. So, on balance there is fortunately some improvement in this patient with very severe airflow limitation, even when at rest.
