Lung elasticity

As the elastic properties of the lung are an important determinant of airway caliber, we need to look into lung elasticity in somewhat greater detail. You will learn from the accompanying animation that:

  1. due to the effects of gravity on the lung there are regional differences in the stretch to which lungs and airways are subjected
  2. at low lung volumes airways may be occluded (‘airway closure’).
